5 Reasons to Keep Your Old Clothes

Stop throwing away your clothes when you no longer want them! Gazettely gives you 5 good reasons to keep them for later.

This season’s latest top item looks suspiciously like something you wore 10 years ago? Do you regret not keeping it now? Well, maybe it’s because you should have! You probably noticed the current comeback of the 2000’s fashion and old clothes, after the 1990’s came back quite strongly in the last few years.

We are also seeing influences from the 1980’s right now. Stranger Things‘ success is likely to have something to do with the rise of this trend.

In any case, if you were born between the end of the 80’s and the beginning of the 2000’s, you or some members of your family have probably owned a lot of the key old clothes that are coming back in fashion right now.

You might even wonder at times: “If I had known that all this would come back, I would have kept my clothes!” And you’re right.

However, it’s not too late, you can begin to treasure some of the old clothes you love but don’t want to wear anymore. Because believe us, there is a good chance that you will get the chance to wear them again one day, and even sooner than you think.

Accessories and clothes we used to wear as a kid and wear them now

When the chokers came back recently, for example, I remembered that I had some when I was a kid and never threw them away, although I never thought they would come back so soon. I just kept it there as a reminder. And I was right to do that!

Old Clothes giving

Same thing for the bulky scrunchies that we see more and more and that many of us particularly like, we used to wear some when we were little. Today, we are happy to be able to use them again.

Do you remember that fashion of branded t-shirts (Calvin Klein, Guess…) with big logos written in rhinestones on the t-shirts? Well, that’s all coming back too.

Obviously, we give away a lot of our clothes, but we also keep some of them. And here are 5 reasons why you should also do the same.

Fashion is a cycle, so everything will potentially come back

When you no longer want a piece in the moment, but it hasn’t been worn out yet, think twice before you give it away. Sometimes even the most unlikely thing in your wardrobe will look great when you come across it again in a few years.

You can save money!

Just imagine: Something you wore 5 years ago comes back into style. You gave it up because you thought it would never be worn again.

This thing comes back in fashion and you start to regret giving it away, because now to get it, you’ll have to take 40 bucks out of your piggy bank.

However, if you’ve been keeping this old clothes safe and sound, you don’t need to buy it again, just open your closet and dive into the dusty pile at the back to fish out this piece that now seems so magical.

You will literally have a thrift shop at home

Personally, I have been recycling clothes for a while and I often ask my family members to think of me when they want to get rid of something. This results in weekends where I go through everyone’s closets looking for treasures from the past.

Besides, instead of going to crowded shopping malls, choking under the heat and waiting in line for hours for a pair of pants, you can now do your own thrift shopping in the quiet of your family home.

When you see a trend but live in a remote town with a total of one affordable clothing store, it can be hard to rock the latest trend before everyone else…

Particularly when you’re used to waiting several months for a product to finally arrive. But when you have your own thrift store, everything will change! Obviously, you will not always own the best pieces, but it will happen regularly!

There is some nostalgia involved in reconnecting with a piece of clothing from the past

Coming across something you wore at a certain time in your life can bring back memories of that time (good and bad ones, by the way; if it’s the latter, it’s better to part with it). For instance, I recently found my bracelet; I hadn’t worn it since I was about 5 years old.

It will sound extremely silly, but it felt like reconnecting with a part of myself where things were relatively simple and where anxiety was not yet a part of my daily life – but I get lost. If anything, it reminds me of the few, selective, and mostly nice memories I have of that time.

Somehow, when I look at it, it calms me down and reminds me to honor the little me from the past.

Bonus reason to keep your old clothes

If you are like me and haven’t grown up since first grade, odds are you can keep your clothes for life anyway.

So has this made you want to keep your old clothes and build your own home thrift shop? Have you ever found a piece of clothing from the past that brought back a memory or an anecdote? Don’t hesitate to tell us about it in the comments!
