9 Best Eco-Friendly Hotels of 2022

Caution: After reading this article, you may feel the urge to pack up all your savings and go on a real vacation.

Eco-friendly, with first-class amenities, and surrounded by breathtaking nature – those are the resorts that, in the opinion of international experts, are absolutely worth a visit. Be it on a cliff or among the skyscrapers of New York, in these luxury properties, guests will find particularly spacious rooms to relax in.

COMO Le Montrachet Hotel – Short walk to the best wines

COMO Le Montrachet-min

France’s wine lovers shouldn’t miss a stay at a new COMO hotel this year. The COMO Le Montrachet is located in the heart of the Burgundy wine region. It’s very close to the Grand Cru vineyards. The Grand Cru serves as a designation for the best and most prestigious French wines and vineyards.

This hotel will open in phases – with the first phase scheduled for this year. The new hotel’s guests will also enjoy the tranquility of the French countryside. With thirty-one sumptuous rooms and suites, the hotel will spread across four historic 18th-century buildings on a sleepy village square.

KAI Poroto Hotel – Wellness by the Lakes

Anyone in the mood for a wellness vacation should book a flight to Japan as soon as possible. Just recently, a unique wellness resort has opened its doors there. The KAI Poroto Hotel is located on the island of Hokkaido and is surrounded by hot springs, with all rooms offering views of Lake Poroto. Through its architecture and design, the resort also honors the indigenous Ainu people, who are indigenous to Hokkaido.

But the name ryokan – a traditional Japanese inn that emphasizes Japanese traditions – fits KAI Poroto better than a hotel. The hotel’s main attraction is, of course, the spa and healing springs. Equally impressive, however, will be the food – the restaurant will serve fresh sashimi, seafood soups and Hokkaido crab daily.

Sommerro Hotel – The Art Deco style and the first pool on the roof

While Scandinavian countries tend to be associated with minimalist design and muted colors, The Sommerro Hotel, which opens in September in the Norwegian capital of Oslo, proves to be an exception. Encircled by 19th-century buildings, it will feature Art Deco-style furnishings, an ornamental style that was particularly prevalent and popular in the 1920s and 1930s.

“We are Norway’s first hotel in this style,” the hotel promises on social media. However, even at the Sommerro Hotel, the Norwegian minimalism can’t be completely dismissed. In the 242 rooms, colorful Art Deco accents mix with traditional Nordic minimalism in the form of clean lines. Guests will find a plant-filled café, a Nordic Japanese restaurant, and Oslo’s first rooftop pool in common areas.

The Aman New York Hotel – At the fireplace in New York

There is quite a wide range of hotels in New York skyscrapers, and if an establishment wants to compete, it must offer its guests something special. Well, a hotel that will welcome its first guests this May will do just that. The Aman New York facility is a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of New York streets. Located in the Crown Building in Manhattan, it will feature just 83 rooms and suites, each with their own working fireplace – something of a rarity in New York.

The primary reason the Aman New York made it onto the list of top hotels of 2022 is not the fireplaces, of course, but rather the hotel’s truly lavish spa area. Aman Spa will span three floors. It will feature a yoga studio, Hydrotherapy facilities and a 65-foot-long indoor pool.

Buahan Hotel – A stitching room by the rice paddies

Connection with nature is a central concept of Buahan, the Banyan Tree Escape resort opening this April on the Indonesian island of Bali. Surrounded by rice paddies and lush jungle, this hotel makes the most of the pristine nature that surrounds it. It features suites with the ‘no walls, and no doors’ concept that makes guests feel like they are merging with nature.

There are sixteen villas in the hotel, and their interiors blend seamlessly with the exteriors. This is because the villas have no walls or doors, and one bedroom, for example, is seamlessly connected to a terrace with a private pool and breathtaking views of the surrounding nature full of lush greenery. The resort’s highlights also include a plant-based restaurant that uses a “zero waste” concept, where guests can also enjoy food that arrives at the table directly from local farms.

The resort also offers a handful of so-called hideaways to complete the illusion of escaping the daily grind at the hotel. Places are scattered around the grounds where you can hide from the outside world and read or meditate in peace.

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo – Stars above the cliff

Among the biggest current trends in the hotel industry are sustainability and environmental protection. Those who love luxury hotels are increasingly looking for environmentally friendly accommodations. So Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo in the Mexican state of Jalisco is a new ultra-luxury hotel that is completely eco-friendly. Besides being sustainable, it also provides guests with a truly private vacation.

The hotel is nestled into a cliff on a private peninsula off Mexico’s Pacific coast and will open its doors to the guests in April. Because the Tamarindo resort is part of the Four Seasons hotel chain, real luxury awaits guests here. “The hotel will offer suites overlooking the cliffs, each with its own private pool, with four on-site restaurants, while guests can choose to swim on the pristine beaches or in the three large pools,” promises the hotel’s website.

In the meantime, the guests can also turn their stay at the hotel into an educational trip. The resort is set in a private ecological reserve of three thousand hectares. What it offers is a so-called Discovery Centre, where guests can learn about the local wildlife. The design of the hotel is also environmentally friendly and blends seamlessly with the surroundings – its 157 rooms are decorated with stone, wooden and local textiles.

By the way, a conversation or a walk with biologists is not the only program that the hotel offers its guests. “The stars are extremely bright over the resort. And our astronomers are happy to guide guests through the starry sky, to show the constellations of the planets and explain the importance of space for the native people of the place and how it has influenced their buildings and traditions,” the resort’s official website says.

Rock House Hotel – Most luxurious by far

Overlooking the azure sky and the even more azure ocean are the rooms at the new resort in the Turks and Caicos Islands, which is part of the Lucayan archipelago in the Caribbean. Rock House Hotel will open this spring, in early May, to be exact. The new resort will be one of the most luxurious resorts in the region. The guests will stay in 46 sumptuous Mediterranean-inspired cabanas, each of which will offer ocean views and a private pool.

Cabanas will be nestled into the cliffs. Below the cliffs, guests will find a private beach and beach club pier equipped with umbrellas and lounge chairs. The boats will be able to dock at the pier. The people will also find a place where they can comfortably get on a boat that will take them on a dream sea adventure,” says the official website of Rock House Resort.

Beaond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge – Swimming against a backdrop of wildlife

The place where the Beaond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge will welcome guests starting this June has been a tented camp since the 1990s. But instead of tents, this hotel in Africa’s Serengeti National Park will offer ten luxury lodges.

Sustainability is even at the forefront of the luxury lodging’s location. Eighty percent will use renewable energy. Other hotel highlights include a state-of-the-art fitness room or a so-called infinity pool that will overlook a watering hole for wildlife. It is then promised that things like hippos can be seen from the hotel on the facility’s website. However, hotel guests will also be able to participate in guided tours to see lions.

One & Only Esthesis Hotel – Sea, Forest, and the Acropolis

A little bit of everything. That is what the One & Only Esthesis Hotel, which will open in Greece later this year, promises to offer guests. The resort offers travelers the best of the city’s bustling world – located just a short walk from Athens and iconic sites like the Acropolis – with relaxation, delivering the tranquility of a seaside retreat.

It is located within a twenty-one-acre wooded area, directly on the seashore. Its 127 rooms pay homage to mid-century design with high ceilings, leathers and muted tones. Each suite will offer breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. The hotel’s official website says guests will also enjoy a luxurious spa, including a health spa – it’s a thermal bath that uses minerals with healing properties.
