PlayStation 5 Official Sales Figures: Sony Publishes New Data

The Japanese company went on to share the number of current subscribers to the PlayStation Plus service.

We learned at the outset of June that PlayStation 5 sales had surpassed 20 million copies. Nevertheless, it turns out that in the following weeks of the said month, the Japanese company’s newest console managed to find many new buyers.

In fact, Sony presented its financial results for the first quarter of the current fiscal year, through which we learned the PS5’s official sales figures.

Almost 2.5 million PlayStation 5 copies sold in three months

According to the published report, a total of 2.4 million PlayStation 5 units were sold in the period from April 1 to June 30 of this year, meaning that the total sales of the console – since the launch of the device in November 2020 – has reached 21.7 million units.

Meanwhile, the Japanese company also stated that they will no longer report the sales results of the PlayStation 4.

In addition, Sony also shared data on PlayStation Plus. As of June 30, according to the information provided, Sony had a total of 47.3 million active subscribers.

This compares with 46.3 million users of the Japanese company’s subscription in the previous fiscal year. The growth in interest in the service was certainly influenced by recent changes.

Also, we found out that 47.1 million copies of games were sold on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

However, Sony revealed that only 6.4 million units were exclusive productions developed by teams belonging to the PlayStation Studios family.

Note that during the mentioned period as much as 79% of PS4 and PS5 games were bought through the PlayStation Store.

In contrast, last year the figure was 71%. Therefore, we see that gamers are increasingly willing to use digital distribution.
