Sony Wants More Gems Like Stray: The Company To Expand PlayStation Indies Operation

Will we see more PlayStation exclusive games like Stray in the future?

The Stray is one of the latest releases to debut exclusively on PS5, PS4 and PC, and is getting a fantastic reception despite its smaller scope. Now Sony is aware of the strength from independent titles, and has decided to expand the PlayStation Indies program.

Greg Rice, head of PlayStation Creators, has published a message on Sony’s blog that should, by all means, attract the attention of many independent developers.

The Japanese corporation’s representative highlighted that for several years, smaller teams had been able to count on more and more help and promotion, such as through specially prepared periodic Indie Spotlight events or sharing content on their social media. The time has come, however, for the next phase of cooperation.

“Our ongoing goal is to make PlayStation the best place to publish and play games of all shapes and sizes. (…) To that end, we are always looking to lower the barrier to entry and improve the process of publishing on PlayStation. We are pleased to announce a new initiative that will make it easier for new partners to join and start creating on PlayStation consoles.”

A new program has been announced through which smaller studios can receive one PS5 devkit and one console test kit – allowing creators to develop projects on the PlayStation 5 as a result.

While Sony has been offering devkits for many months, smaller companies now will be given access to them as well, and they will have the chance to become PlayStation partners developing productions for the PlayStation community.

The initiative, we can suspect, is directly related to the success of titles such as Stray – since the start of the generation, the industry giant has been eagerly promoting indie games and establishing partnerships with various developers to make some projects debut on PS5 and PS4 as console exclusives.
