Discord Is Coming for PlayStation 4 and 5

It is time for a multiplatform voice chat.

Discord PlayStation

This is some perfect news for gamers. Used by hundreds of millions of people, audio chat application Discord is set to make its way to Sony consoles. This will allow owners of PlayStation family hardware, the PS4 and PS5, to talk with users of PCs, Mobile devices and Xbox consoles any day now.

While Discord is one of the most popular online audio chat applications among gamers, it currently enjoys popularity on PCs and mobile devices. However, soon consoles may join the supported hardware. There have just been reports of a Discord app being released for Sony’s PlayStation family of consoles.

Not surprisingly, both of the major game console manufacturers have a hankering for Discord integration. While both the Xbox and PlayStation family hardware support voice chat, it is only available within that one platform.

If one wants to chat while playing with the owner of a PC, mobile device or a third-party console, today one has to scramble and, for instance, hook up the console and phone to headphones at the same time.

There are, naturally, some games that support cross-play and have their own voice chat, but, alas, this is not the case with all of them. The use of such solutions also has its downsides, because once you leave the server or the game, such connection is interrupted.

The integration with the Discord service, which was announced by Microsoft in July, would resolve this problem on the Xbox side. What about Sony consoles? The latest information is that the application will appear on PS4 and PS5 any day now.

Information that Discord is heading to PlayStation is confirmed by several independent sources. The arrival of the app for this service and its voice chat is reportedly a matter of “several months” and is scheduled to take place with the release of PS5 version 7.00 ( the debut of this software version 6.00 is scheduled for mid-September).

Considering this information, it is quite likely that we will benefit from Discord on PS4 and PS5 before the end of this year.

The release of the app would, by the way, be a nice gift for gamers on the occasion of the second anniversary of PlayStation’s launch, and might sweeten the recent price hike of both Sony hardware included in the latest generation.
