Street Fighter Developers Looking to the Future With High Hopes

Is the game series set to run for the next 35 years?

Street Fighter is a series that doesn’t need to be introduced to anyone. The cult brand associated with the brawler genre has built its status in the video game industry for decades and is now an integral part of it.

Despite the fact that in recent years it has become a little quieter (in relation to, for instance, Mortal Kombat or Tekken), but it still has a whole lot of admirers. And the coming installment (which could debut in a few months) is set to make quite a stir again.

Even though Street Fighter 6 itself is a melody of the future, the team from Capcom was asked by Retro Gamer magazine to take a peek even further into it.

On the occasion of the brand’s 35th anniversary celebration, Takayuki Nakayama was asked where he sees the series in another 35 years. His response was, naturally, in jest, but there is no doubt that he would indeed like to further develop his brand:

We will probably get Street Fighter 12 by then! No idea what that would look like, so I guess the best I can hope for is that people will still be enjoying the series then [in 35 years – ed. note].

What has to be said with full conviction is that this is not a fanciful pipe dream at all. If only everything continues to flourish, with the electronic sports scene continuing to remain at such an interesting level as it is today, Street Fighter itself will probably still have quite a lot of room for development.

How do you think brawlers might look in these 35 years? A virtual reality? avatars? Or perhaps the good old classics?
