Fans Break New Record on Steam As Rockstar Abandons Red Dead Online

The community marked the anniversary of the video game's multiplayer mode.

Red Dead Online, the multiplayer component of the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2, made its debut on November 27, 2018.

Although it is unable to reach the success and popularity of its big brother, the GTA Online, it keeps a stable community of players. As a proof of this, there is a new record it achieved on Steam.

In the framework of its anniversary number 4, Rockstar Games‘ popular title’s multiplayer mode got a spike in popularity on Valve’s platform during the current holiday weekend.

Data from the SteamDB site (via PCGamesN) show that it reached an all-time high of 66,492 simultaneous players on November 27.

While that’s a far cry from reaching the traffic of other more prominent experiences, it is an achievement in itself that a video game that debuted in 2019 for PC got nearly 70,000 concurrent users. That’s reportedly the best figure in Red Dead Redemption 2’s history since its launch on Steam.

As of this writing, things remain favorable for Red Dead Online. This is because there are 43,399 concurrent users, proving that there is a loyal and passionate online community around Rockstar Games’ abandoned western.

The popularity rebound is due to multiple factors. We must remember that Thanksgiving Day took place in the United States, meaning that many people have more free time. Moreover, the open world title is on offer on Steam on the occasion of Black Friday.

The news comes as a surprise because of the context. Midway through this year, Rockstar Games has confirmed that the open-world western would no longer receive substantial new content.

That means that servers remain active and there will be minor updates, but core-altering additions to the experience are conspicuous by their absence.

Predictably, community members expressed their disappointment. In a gesture of respect, gamers held a virtual funeral to mourn the “demise” of Red Dead Online.
