Mid last year, NetherRealm Studios announced that it will stop releasing additional content for Mortal Kombat 11 to focus fully on its new project.

The months passed and players are still in the dark about what the studio is working on. Although the doubt still lingers, Ed Boon has shared a clue that clears up many theories.

The Chicago, USA-based studio is known for being responsible for 2 intellectual properties: Mortal Kombat and Injustice.

Over the last decade, it has alternated between the two, so it’s easy to assume that the next project will be a sequel to the DC Comics fighting game.

Yet, recent uncertainty that enveloped NetherRealm Studios following Warner Media’s merger to Discovery gave rise to rumors that the developers are prioritizing the production of a new Mortal Kombat. Also, the studio is believed by fans to be working on an unreleased franchise.

In the midst of the wave of theories and speculation, Ed Boon, creative director of the studio and co-creator of the Mortal kombat franchise, did confirm what seemed obvious in a recent Q&A session on Twitter.

Saturday, November 19, creative asked his followers to ask questions. Predictably, a lot of the concerns revolved around the studio’s new project. While refraining from revealing specific information, he shared a hint that got the community excited.

In a response to a fan, Ed Boon did confirm that NetherRealm Studios’ new project is either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3.

The news won’t surprise many people, particularly considering the studio’s history of releases, but it eliminates the theory that there’s a third franchise in the works.

Sure, there is always the possibility that the executive is joking and telling lies to keep the surprise going. After all, he’s notorious for trolling his followers with cryptic messages. In any case, it seems we will have to wait to find out what his plans are.

At the Q&A session, Ed Boon did confirm that he will attend The Game Awards 2022 gala, but assured that he won’t be taking the stage.
