“Limited accounts” preventing younger gamers from using potentially dangerous features within games will soon be coming to the Epic Games Store platform. According to the company’s announcement, every EGS account holder here will be asked to specify their age.
Junior players, meaning those under the age of 13, will receive a limited account status, and will be asked to provide the email address of a parent or guardian who will be able to manage the child’s access to selected features.
Limited account users will be unable to, at least, voice chat, to download games that do not belong to the Epic Games studio, and to purchase in-game items with real-world currency.
A parent will decide on access to the aforementioned features using the parental control configuration.
“Players will still be able to use the Epic Games launcher, but they will only be granted access to certain features after parental control settings are configured. Once a parent or guardian configures the parental control settings, players will be granted access to the features selected in the settings, and their account will no longer be a limited account.”
Developer’s decision is quite understandable, particularly if we consider how popular titles such as Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys are among younger players.
However, it remains an issue that a large portion of juvenile users will, with little reproach, misrepresent the platform by inflating their age. However, it’ possible that the company is somehow prepared for this.
