PS VR2 Will Not Get Backward Compatibility, and Creating Ports Is “Difficult.”

Sony does not have the best news for gamers, who were hoping that many developers will decide to make free ports of games from PlayStation VR to PlayStation VR2.

Apparently, the developer has not taken care of backward compatibility, and it is expected to take a long time to create new versions.

PlayStation VR 2 is set for release in February 2023, and it will be a fully next-gen hardware developed for PlayStation 5. The Japanese corporation wants to focus exclusively on the latest games, which ultimately could be a big problem for gamers and developers.

During a recent interview with Famitsu editors, Hideaki Nishino, Sony’s senior vice president of platform experience, affirmed that the technology used in the PS VR2 would make it difficult to port games.

Japanese developers are not going to be required to develop new versions of previously released titles, as it will be a time-consuming process.

“This time, in addition to the new controller tracking, we have adopted a rendering method called ‘foveate rendering,’ which increases the resolution of the part [of the game] that the eyes focus on. The system itself is very different from the previous model, and it won’t be a simple porting job.”

Sony’s official stressed that a lot still depends on the games themselves, but it’s up to the developers to show their willingness to develop its productions for the PlayStation VR 2.

Some game titles (such as the Moss series) will come to PS VR2, but we should rather not expect free updates.
