Marvel Remains Open to Developing Games for Adults, Though They Must “Fit the Character”

As the creative minds at Marvel Games assure us, they are open to exploring mature themes and storylines in their upcoming titles. However, they also emphasize that these games must remain true to the characters and their respective universes.

So, while we may not see a gritty, R-rated version of Spider-Man or Iron Man on the PS4 and PS5, there may be other characters within the Marvel universe that lend themselves to more mature content.

One such character is none other than the ferocious Wolverine. Fans were tantalized with a glimpse of the new game from Insomniac Games during the PlayStation Showcase in September 2021, and the creative director, Brian Horton, has described it as a “full-sized” game with an adult tone. But the wait is not over yet as the game will be released in 2023.

It’s worth noting that Marvel Games does not impose an MCU-style connected universe for their games. They believe in giving creative freedom to their developers, which allows for a more diverse range of stories and experiences.

So, while we may not see a gritty, R-rated version of Spider-Man or Iron Man on the PS4 and PS5, we may see other characters within the Marvel universe that lend themselves to more mature content.

Despite crafting games with engaging storylines and distinct from their film counterparts, there is always the possibility of delving into more mature territory with a rating of +16 or +18.

Characters like Logan, Daredevil, and The Punisher have pushed boundaries in the comic book world, and we’ve seen hints of this in games like X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, this type of content is not often explored in Marvel games – at least, not in recent years.

But now, in an interview with ComicBook about the highly-anticipated release of Iron Man VR in Meta Quest 2, Marvel Games Vice President Bill Rosemann has hinted at the possibility of a Marvel game geared towards a more mature audience.

This could be a thrilling new direction for the beloved franchise, delving deeper into the complex and nuanced world of these beloved characters. It’s an exciting time to be a Marvel fan, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
