Street Fighter 6: Why Chun-Li Was Among the Hardest Characters To Redesign

The new installment of Capcom’s popular franchise, Street Fighter 6, will introduce new characters that will try to win over fans. Also returning will be classic fighters with a revamped look to denote their age and maturity. Although redesigning the original cast members was quite a challenge, one particular character stood out.

We should remind you that the new installment is set after the events of Street Fighter 3rd Strike, meaning it is the most recent in story arenas. As such, original characters like Ryu, Ken, Dhalsim and Guile look older and more experienced.

With that on the table, doing the new design of Chun-Li for Street Fighter 6 was a very difficult challenge that the creative team had to take on. So confirmed art director Kaname Fujioka during a recent interview.

Street Fighter 6: Making Chun-Li’s New Design Was Complicated

Speaking to the GameInformer portal (via Event Hub), Fujioka confessed that Chun-Li was one of the most complicated characters to design for the sixth main installment of the fighting franchise.

This because one of the character’s original creators is also her mentor, adding more responsibility to the task. It’s possible that the artist referred to is Akira “Akiman” Yasuda.

Moreover, Kaname Fujioka commented that the fighter’s new look was meant to emphasize his age and make clear his new motivations.

“In terms of Chun-Li’s themes, we wanted to emphasize the fact that she was able to eliminate Shadaloo and is now a bit older, similar to Ryu. She aged gracefully and is more of a teacher who teaches those below her who are a little younger,” shared the Street Fighter 6 art director.

Thankfully, it seems that the creative and the rest of the Capcom team hit the mark. This is because the new design of the Chinese fighter met expectations and was liked by the vast majority of fans. However, there were some who rejected the idea of seeing a more mature Chin-Li in the game.
