Two Star Wars Films Shelved, Unlikely to Ever Be Produced

The Cancellation Includes Patty Jenkins' "Rouge Squadron".

The Star Wars universe has seen the cancellation of two long-anticipated films, both of which are unlikely to ever come to fruition.

One of these is the highly anticipated “Rouge Squadron” project, along with an unnamed movie under the helm of Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios.

While no new information has surfaced regarding these two productions recently, it appears that they have been put on the back burner.

Kathleen Kennedy, the head of Lucasfilm responsible for the Star Wars brand, first announced “Rouge Squadron” in December of 2020. The film was set to be directed by Patty Jenkins, the creator of the less successful “Wonder Woman” series.

However, Disney has since abandoned the project, pulling the scheduled December 2023 release date. According to Variety, the idea will likely be discarded altogether.

Although Jenkins stated in late 2022 that she was still working on the production vision, it remains uncertain whether she will be able to bring her vision to life.

Sources have also reported that Kevin Feige’s Star Wars project has been shelved, despite fan enthusiasm and the involvement of Michael Waldron.

Waldron, the screenwriter of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” was initially brought on board to write Feige’s film, but was ultimately included in the team that would implement “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set to premiere in 2026.

While Rian Johnson, the director of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” has expressed interest in directing more films in the series, he is currently occupied with other projects.

Johnson will first need to finish recording the second season of “Poker Face” and new installments of the “Glass Onion” series with Daniel Craig before returning to the Star Wars franchise.

There is still hope, however, in Taika Waititi, the director of last year’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Waititi has expressed interest in creating his own Star Wars film and potentially starring in it.

A similar situation occurred in Waititi’s war comedy “Jojo Rabbit,” where he both directed the film and played the role of an imaginary Adolf Hitler.

Additionally, Lucasfilm has not given up on the idea of a Star Wars film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a respected documentary filmmaker who has shot individual episodes of the series “Ms. Marvel.” While the status of this project remains unclear, there is still potential for it to come to fruition.
