Who’s Winning the Console Wars in 2022? Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft!

The Video Game Console Industry Takes a Hit in 2022, but Subscriptions Are on the Rise. Here's How Sony's PS5, Microsoft's Xbox, and Nintendo's Switch are Sharing the Market.

Are you wondering who’s leading the console market in 2022? With Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft being the big players, it’s a tough competition. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the current state of the console wars and how Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are sharing the market pie.

While Nintendo Switch has been around for six years and sold over 120 million consoles to date, PlayStation 5 has become the best-selling next-generation console with over 30 million consoles sold.

Xbox Series X | S may not have sold as much as PS5, but it has shown significant improvement from the times of Xbox One, thanks to its diversified offerings such as the Xbox Game Pass service.

So, who dominates the world video game market? According to Ampere Analysis, Sony currently leads with a 45% market share, while Nintendo and Microsoft share the rest almost equally with 27.3% each.

However, compared to the previous year, Sony and Nintendo have dropped 1.3% and 0.5% respectively, while Microsoft is the only one that managed to grow.

Interestingly, while the console market has suffered a 7.8% decrease in total consumption and a 9.3% decrease in revenue, subscription services like Game Pass and PS Plus have seen a 5.6% growth in revenue.

Despite the decline in total subscribers, more expensive tiers like PS Plus Premium and Game Pass Ultimate attract fewer subscribers but those who are willing to spend more.

Sony Nintendo and Microsoft

Looking ahead, Ampere predicts that the distance between PS5 and Xbox Series will increase in favor of the Sony console, which already offers stable stock of PS5, while Xbox Series X is expected to only achieve stable stock in the second half of the year. As for Nintendo, they are predicted to launch a new generation of consoles by the end of 2024.

In conclusion, while the console industry may be taking a hit in 2022, subscriptions are on the rise, and the competition between Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft is as fierce as ever.
