Scarlett Johansson Reflects on Her Legal Dispute with Disney Over Black Widow Release

The Actress and Disney Eventually Settled the Contract Breach Dispute, with Johansson Expressing Disappointment and Sadness

Scarlett Johansson recently opened up about one of the most challenging moments in her career: her legal dispute with Disney over the release of Black Widow, a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie’s release was significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, which led to the lawsuit.

The pandemic forced the entire world to adapt, with many businesses, including cinemas, closing their doors until it was safe to reopen. As a result, numerous highly anticipated film releases were postponed, including Black Widow.

Disney’s Simultaneous Release Decision

When theaters began reopening, it was clear that audiences would be smaller due to ongoing concerns about the virus. In response, Disney chose to release Black Widow simultaneously in theaters and on their streaming platform, Disney+, via the Premium service.

Scarlett Johansson believed this decision breached her contract, as it significantly affected her potential earnings from box office sales.

Reaching a Settlement with Disney

After much back-and-forth, Johansson and Disney eventually resolved their differences and reached a financial settlement behind closed doors. It is rumored that Disney paid the actress an impressive sum of $40 million.

In a recent interview with Variety, Johansson, who is soon to appear in the film Asteroid City, reflected on her legal battle with Disney.

The actress shared her feelings about the embarrassing moment when Disney released a statement criticizing her for suing them and demanding financial compensation for the Marvel movie.

Johansson’s Emotional Reaction to the Dispute

“I was sad and disappointed. But mostly sad. It was such a surreal moment because we were all isolated and just kind of emerging,” Johansson said.

At the time of the dispute, she was also pregnant, which she described as “an amazing moment.” She continued, “Suddenly, all your attention is directed to this miracle of life. So, I had the most wonderful distraction in the world and soon after I had a beautiful baby.”

Despite ultimately settling the lawsuit, Scarlett Johansson confirmed that her time as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is over, and she will not reprise the role in future projects. The question remains: will fans miss her presence in the MCU?
