However, it appears that Nvidia may soon face increased competition, as unofficial reports indicate that Microsoft has partnered with AMD to create more efficient AI systems.
Microsoft and AMD’s Potential Collaboration
According to Bloomberg, Microsoft may offer engineering resources and unspecified “support” to AMD. In exchange, AMD is expected to support Microsoft in developing their own processor, codenamed Athena.
It is important to treat this information with caution, as Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw has stated that AMD is not involved in the Athena project:
“AMD is a great partner. However, they are not involved in the work on Athena.”
Despite this statement, Microsoft’s acknowledgement of the Athena project confirms that the company is indeed working on its own AI processor—a fact that was previously uncertain.
The Plausibility of a Partnership
The possibility of a collaboration between AMD and Microsoft seems plausible, given the significant number of chips required to support AI programs such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Azure.
