Ubisoft’s Star Wars: Outlaws Promises Distinctive Gameplay on Every Planet

Creative Director Julian Gerighty and Narrative Director Navid Khavari share exciting details about the gameplay and setting of Star Wars: Outlaws.

Star Wars: Outlaws emerged as one of the biggest announcements during the Summer Showcases, and as more information surfaces about Ubisoft’s highly anticipated game, details are beginning to emerge regarding the unique gameplay experiences players can expect on the various planets within the Star Wars universe.

Creative Director Julian Gerighty recently spoke about Star Wars: Outlaws in an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, providing further insights into the game’s action-packed adventure.

Gerighty revealed that each planet players can explore within the game will offer a distinct gameplay experience. Each world will present its own set of challenges and require players to adopt different strategies and approaches.

“In our development process, we aimed to ensure that every planet in the game offers a different gameplay experience. For instance, on Toshara, players can navigate the unforgiving wilderness on a speeder bike, while on another planet, they can delve into the underworld as a stealthy thief,” explained Gerighty. Toshara, the planet featured in the announcement trailer, serves as just one example of the varied planetary experiences players can anticipate.

Varied Gameplay and Iconic Star Wars Planets

Star Wars: Outlaws aims to provide diverse gameplay encounters, although Gerighty acknowledges that it will not feature as many planets or randomly generated content as titles like Starfield or No Man’s Sky.

However, players can look forward to exploring both new planets and iconic Star Wars locations, all seamlessly integrated into the game world. The exact number of individual systems has yet to be disclosed by the developer.

A Tale Set Between Episodes V and VI

Narrative Director Navid Khavari shared details about the game’s setting. Star Wars: Outlaws takes place between “Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Episode VI: Return of the Jedi,” during a time when underground criminal syndicates were most active. Khavari references the five syndicates that have been mentioned throughout the Star Wars films to varying degrees.

Lucasfilm plays a significant role in the creative process surrounding the game. The idea for the game’s chronological placement originally came from Lucasfilm, and the Star Wars veterans are collaborating with Ubisoft not only on the story and lore but also on the gameplay mechanics.

This collaboration ensures that Star Wars: Outlaws will stay true to the beloved material and resonate with fans of the sci-fi franchise.

Expansive Worlds to Discover

Star Wars Outlaws

Star Wars: Outlaws offers a substantial scope, even if it may not match the vast number of planets found in comparable titles. Game Director Mathias Karlson confirms that the planet Toshara alone will represent a sizable explorable game world, akin to the expansive rendition of Washington D.C. in Tom Clancy’s The Division 2.

Star Wars: Outlaws is slated for release in 2024 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, promising an immersive and engaging journey through the iconic Star Wars universe. Players can look forward to embarking on thrilling adventures, each with its own unique gameplay mechanics and challenges, as they explore the richly detailed planets within the game.
