AI Joins Call of Duty to Monitor Voice Chats and Curb Toxicity

Activision Implements AI Solution to Enhance Online Gaming Environment.

Call of Duty, the popular online game, is taking steps to combat toxicity in its gaming community. Activision, the company behind the franchise, has collaborated with an AI technology provider, Modulate, to introduce a solution called ToxMod.

This AI-based voice moderation tool is set to be integrated into Call of Duty titles, including Modern Warfare 2, Warzone 2, and the upcoming Modern Warfare 3. The intention is to enhance the online experience for players by curbing toxic behavior and fostering a healthier gaming environment.

ToxMod, designed by Modulate, is a unique AI solution developed specifically for games. It is equipped with the capability to identify and address harmful speech patterns in real-time. The AI focuses on spotting and addressing various forms of toxic behavior, such as hate speech, discriminatory language, and harassment.

Beta Testing and Implementation: North American Servers Lead the Way

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

The ToxMod AI system has begun beta testing on North American servers as of today. It marks a significant step toward mitigating toxic interactions within the Call of Duty gaming community.

While the tool is primed to take on the challenge, it is important to note that it won’t autonomously issue player bans. Rather, ToxMod’s primary function is to monitor and report instances of toxic behavior to the game’s moderation team.

ToxMod’s uniqueness lies in its ability to analyze not just keywords, but also the tone and intent behind speech. This capacity enables the AI to differentiate between harmless banter and genuinely harmful interactions.

Modulate’s AI technology has been trained through extensive exposure to a diverse range of speech patterns, allowing it to discern between malicious intent and friendly interactions.

Striving for Fairness: Addressing Complex Scenarios

ToxMod’s ethical considerations encompass intricate situations. For instance, while terms like the n-word are typically regarded as offensive, ToxMod takes into account the context and reactions within the conversation.

If the term is being used as part of a reclaimed usage within a specific community, it may not be flagged as severely. Similarly, the AI takes into consideration factors like the age of speakers, particularly when children are involved in conversations.

ToxMod’s capabilities have extended beyond detecting harmful speech. The AI has been updated to identify signals of violent radicalization. By detecting terms and phrases associated with extremist ideologies, ToxMod contributes to making the gaming environment safer and more inclusive.

AI’s Role in Online Gaming: Navigating a Balanced Approach

While ToxMod will soon be introduced worldwide with the launch of Modern Warfare 3, it’s important to understand that AI solutions, like this one, are not meant to act as standalone decision-makers.

Rather, they collaborate with human moderation teams and adhere to the established Code of Conduct for the game. This approach aims to maintain a balanced approach while ensuring a positive and enjoyable gaming experience for all players.
