The Cyberpunk 2077 gaming community has been buzzing with intrigue and excitement over the possibility of Elon Musk making a cameo appearance in the game. However, according to one CD Projekt Red developer, this widely held belief is far from the truth, despite Musk himself expressing a strong desire for a cameo role.
Patrick K. Mills, the senior quest designer for Cyberpunk 2077, unequivocally dismissed the popular fan theory suggesting that Elon Musk could be spotted in the game’s corpo opening. He labeled it as nothing more than “nonsense,” putting an end to the speculations that had been swirling in gaming circles.
This revelation came in response to a post by a user known as Virus_Kid on a platform (referred to as X). Virus_Kid pointed out a new character model introduced in the game-changing Update 2.0, exclaiming, “Oh my god they removed the Elon Musk cameo from the corpo opening in Cyberpunk 2077.” Screenshots comparing the cutscene before and after the patch accompanied the statement.
Patrick K. Mills swiftly debunked the notion, asserting, “That wasn’t Elon Musk. It looks nothing like him. Who came up with this nonsense?” However, Mills did not delve further into the matter, humorously noting that he had Elon Musk’s name muted on the platform, preventing him from engaging with responses.

The belief in Elon Musk’s cameo had gained traction due to his association with the tech-focused corporate world portrayed in Cyberpunk 2077’s corpo opening. Furthermore, Musk had expressed his wish for a cameo during a recording session with CD Projekt Red, where he was accompanied by his former girlfriend, Grimes, who portrayed the character Lizzy Wizzy in the game.
As reported by PC Gamer, Grimes mentioned in an Elon Musk biography that her boyfriend brought an antique firearm to the recording session, quipping, “I told them that I was armed but not dangerous.”
When IGN sought further clarification from CD Projekt Red, the company chose not to elaborate on the matter.
Aside from the cameo controversy, Update 2.0 brought substantial changes to Cyberpunk 2077, including a new perk system and improved AI. This update rekindled interest in the game on platforms like Steam, a surge that preceded the launch of its singular expansion, Phantom Liberty, scheduled for September 26.
