Cities: Skylines 2, the latest installment in the city-building game series, has proven to be a formidable challenge for even the most powerful graphics cards available today.
The game’s performance issues have been a topic of discussion in the gaming community, and a recent test conducted by Gamers Nexus sheds light on how even the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 struggles to deliver smooth gameplay.
Gamers Nexus, a well-known hardware testing channel on YouTube, conducted extensive tests on a range of graphics cards using Cities: Skylines 2. The results were startling, with the game being described as “one of the worst-optimized games we’ve ever tested.” The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, a top-tier graphics card, struggled to maintain an average of 40fps at 4K resolution on the Low preset graphics option.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Takes the Lead
Interestingly, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX outperformed the RTX 4090 in this particular test, achieving an average of 66.9 fps.
This is notable considering the $600 price difference between the two cards. However, it’s important to highlight that these frame rates are still far from what gamers would expect from such high-end hardware.
Lower Tier Cards Face a Bloodbath
The performance drops significantly as we move down the graphics card tiers. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8GB managed only 28.7fps on average at 1080p and Medium preset, while the RTX 4060 fared even worse with 22.7fps. These results are particularly concerning for gamers who have invested in current-gen graphics cards, expecting a smooth gaming experience.
On a positive note, the developers of Cities: Skylines 2 seem to be actively working on performance improvements. Recent patches have resulted in performance gains of up to 11%, indicating that the game’s optimization is a priority for the team. Gamers are hopeful that with time, the game will be better optimized to take full advantage of the hardware available.
