Tekken 8 Reveals Reina: A New Twist in the Mishima Saga

Bandai Namco's Latest Fighter Merges Tradition with Fresh Talent.

The world of competitive fighting games is abuzz with excitement as Bandai Namco unveils the final character for Tekken 8’s base roster, the enigmatic and swift Reina.

This new addition marks a significant moment in the franchise, as Reina brings a unique blend of speed and power, potentially filling the void left by the iconic Heihachi Mishima.

Reina’s introduction to the Tekken universe is not just a mere addition of a new face. It’s steeped in lore and mystery, with speculation rife that she could be one of Heihachi Mishima’s numerous offspring.

Tekken 8 director Katsuhiro Harada once mentioned Heihachi having as many as 18-25 children, lending credence to these rumors. This is further hinted at by her distinctive fighting style that incorporates moves such as the Wind God Fist and Spinning Demon, hallmarks of Mishima-style karate.

A Character of Duality

Reina isn’t just a one-dimensional fighter; she embodies a complex character with a dual nature. Her outwardly fashionable and charming appearance belies a deep-seated charisma of evil, reflecting the duality in both her personality and her martial arts style. This intriguing blend makes her a vital figure in the upcoming game’s storyline, “The Dark Awakens.”

The creation of Reina is the work of Mariko Shimazaki, known for her role in designing memorable characters like Kazumi and Josie in Tekken 7. To bring authenticity to Reina’s fighting style, which is rooted in Taido, Tekken’s team collaborated with Tetsuji Nakano, a four-time Taido World Champion. This collaboration ensures that Reina’s moves are not only visually stunning but also technically sound.

A Diverse Cast and Authenticity

Adding to the diverse roster is another new character, Victor Chevalier, voiced by French actor Vincent Cassel. This casting choice adds a layer of authenticity to the game, as it veers away from the stereotypical practice of using actors with inauthentic accents for characters from different regions.

Tekken enthusiasts don’t have much longer to wait, as Tekken 8 is set to release on January 26 next year. Available platforms include PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, promising to bring this thrilling world to a wide range of gamers.
