Joaquin Phoenix-led ‘Napoleon’ Hits Box Office Heights

The Historical Epic Captures Global Imagination, Surpassing $200 Million Mark.

Ridley Scott’s latest cinematic venture, “Napoleon,” has made a triumphant march at the global box office, surpassing the $200 million mark. This biographical epic, starring Joaquin Phoenix and produced by Apple Original Films, has captivated audiences worldwide, showcasing the director’s signature storytelling prowess.

As of the latest reports, “Napoleon” has amassed a total of $200.7 million globally, with a significant portion of $141.1 million coming from international markets. The domestic box office contribution stands at $59.6 million. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the film’s Thanksgiving debut, where it garnered a remarkable $78.8 million globally, exceeding initial expectations.

The film’s international success has been a focal point, surpassing the lifetime earnings of other notable titles such as “Elvis,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Scott’s own “House of Gucci.” The European market has played a pivotal role, with the United Kingdom leading at $16.7 million, followed closely by France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Other significant contributions have come from Mexico, Australia, the Netherlands, China, and Brazil, rounding out the top ten markets.

“Napoleon” delves into the life of the renowned military leader, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix. The film narrates Napoleon’s rapid rise to power as Emperor, intertwined with his intense and often tumultuous relationship with his wife Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby. Tahar Rahim also stars in this gripping tale that combines elements of love, ambition, and historical drama.

Strategic Global Promotion and Distribution

Napoleon Review

Sony Pictures, responsible for the film’s distribution, orchestrated a strategic global promotion, beginning with a world premiere in Paris. Subsequent premieres in the UK and Madrid, notably at the Prado museum, a first for such an event, significantly boosted the film’s profile. The presence of the film’s stars on red carpets and a mature target audience contributed to its widespread appeal, overcoming some critical reviews.

Following its theatrical run, “Napoleon” is set to stream globally on Apple TV+. The distribution deal between Sony and Apple Original Films involves Sony receiving approximately 8% of the box office revenue, with Apple underwriting marketing costs. Sony first recoups its marketing expenses before any profits are shared with Apple. This arrangement has proved fruitful, especially given the film’s robust ticket sales abroad.

This box office success comes as Sony secures global theatrical distribution deals for two major upcoming Apple Original Films: “Wolfs,” featuring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and “Project Artemis,” starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum.
