The End of an Era: Jonathan Majors Departs from Marvel’s Kang Role

Marvel Studios Faces a New Challenge as Jonathan Majors Leaves Kang Role, Prompting Changes in Avengers Sequel.

In a dramatic turn of events, Jonathan Majors, the actor who brought Kang the Conqueror to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has been dismissed from his role by Marvel Studios. This decision follows Majors’ recent conviction for reckless assault in the third degree and harassment. The actor’s departure from the MCU marks a significant shift in Marvel’s future plans, particularly for the anticipated Avengers sequel.

Jonathan Majors was a relatively new addition to the MCU, having made a striking debut as Kang in the finale of “Loki” Season 1. His portrayal of the time-traveling villain captured audiences’ attention, setting the stage for his character to be a central antagonist in upcoming MCU projects.

Majors reprised the role in the sequel to “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and in the second season of “Loki.” His character, Kang the Conqueror, known for his complex time-traveling narrative, was intricately woven into the MCU’s overarching storyline.

The character of Kang is notable for his multiple variants, each distinct yet interconnected within the MCU’s multiverse narrative. Prior to his dismissal, Majors was expected to portray all these different iterations of Kang, a testament to his versatility as an actor. His portrayal ranged from the enigmatic He Who Remains to the menacing Kang and other versions glimpsed in the post-credits scene of “Ant-Man 3.”

With Majors’ exit, the future of Kang’s character in the MCU remains uncertain. Marvel Studios has not yet announced whether they plan to recast the role or take a different creative direction. This development also casts a shadow on the upcoming “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” which is currently in the scripting phase under the direction of “Loki” creator Michael Waldron.

Interestingly, recent reports suggest that the film, initially named after Majors’ character, is now being referred to simply as “Avengers 5.” Slated for release on May 1, 2026, the project is yet to secure a director.
