Zack Snyder, known for his distinctive cinematic style, is delving into the depths of science fiction with his latest project, “Rebel Moon.” Originally conceived as a mature take on a Star Wars film, Snyder has transformed this idea into an expansive universe, uniquely his own. The director has plans for not just a sequel to 2024’s “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver,” but also an animated series, spinoff comic books, and a narrative podcast.

In a conversation with Inverse, Snyder shared his vision for a comprehensive sourcebook titled “The Great History of the Motherworld.” This book aims to delve deep into the lore of the Rebel Moon universe, charting its origins and the formation of its royal family. Snyder, along with co-writers Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, is meticulously developing a rich backstory that spans various eras, from mythic origins to medieval conflicts.

Despite the ambitious scope of “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire,” the film faced criticism for perceived derivative elements and underdeveloped characters.

However, it has garnered significant viewership on Netflix, indicating a strong audience interest. Snyder’s response to the critiques includes plans for an R-rated director’s cut that may address some of these concerns.

Snyder’s approach to expanding the “Rebel Moon” franchise could benefit from a strategy similar to George Lucas’s handling of the Star Wars saga. Lucas, after directing “A New Hope,” handed over the reins of subsequent films to other directors, allowing him to focus on overarching narrative and technological advancements.

Snyder, while not facing the same challenges as Lucas, such as building a visual effects company, might find value in collaborating with other filmmakers. This could bring new creative perspectives to refine and elevate the “Rebel Moon” series, taking it beyond its initial steps.
