Major Cyber Breach at Insomniac Games: Over 1.6 TB of Sensitive Data Leaked

Insomniac Games Faces Unprecedented Privacy Breach as Hackers Release Sensitive Employee and Project Data.

In a significant cybersecurity breach, the ransomware group Rhysida has released over 1.6 terabytes of confidential data from Insomniac Games, a renowned video game developer known for titles like “Spider-Man” and “Ratchet & Clank.” This incident marks one of the most extensive privacy violations in the gaming industry’s history.

The leaked data encompasses a wide range of sensitive information, including personal details of Insomniac employees, internal communications, and highly confidential information on upcoming video game projects.

Among the disclosed projects is the much-anticipated Wolverine game, with details including plot outlines, in-development footage, and information about the voice acting cast. Fans are cautioned about potential spoilers circulating online due to this leak.

According to Cyberdaily, the released files, amounting to 1.3 million documents, represent 98% of the data obtained by Rhysida in their cyberattack on Insomniac Games. Shockingly, the group claims to have sold the remaining 2% of the data to anonymous buyers on the dark web.

This portion includes sensitive documents from both HR and Slack correspondences, passport details, Zoom conference materials, employment documents, and data from individual employee PCs.

Rhysida, identified as a new form of the criminal operation Gold Victor established in 2021, has a notorious history of targeting various organizations. Their victims range from the British Library to government institutions across Portugal, Chile, Kuwait, and even the US hospital group Prospect Medical Holdings. US government agencies have reported that Rhysida provides “ransomware-as-a-service” to other criminal entities, offering tools and infrastructure in a profit-sharing arrangement.

In response to this incident, Sony, the parent company of Insomniac Games, stated that they were actively investigating the situation. At the time of their initial response, Sony had no indication that other divisions within Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) or Sony Corporation were affected. However, with the situation evolving, further updates from Sony are awaited.
