Starfield Soars to 12 Million Players, Aiming for Skyrim-Level Success

Phil Spencer Envisions Long-Term Success for Starfield, Comparable to Skyrim and Fallout 4

Starfield Review

Bethesda’s latest venture into the cosmos, Starfield, has made a remarkable entry, captivating 12 million players within just three months of its launch. Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, shared this impressive milestone during the recent CCXP entertainment convention in Brazil, expressing his enthusiasm for the game’s early success and future potential.

Spencer, who had the opportunity to play Starfield during its early development stages, recognized its potential from the outset. His experience with the game, marked by an inability to stop playing, indicated to him that Starfield was destined to be a standout title.

His predictions were on point, as Starfield not only reached 12 million players but also became one of the top ten most played games from Microsoft’s studios.

While Spencer didn’t specify the breakdown between purchased copies and Game Pass downloads, Starfield’s release notably drove Game Pass to its “biggest single day ever.” This suggests a significant impact on Microsoft’s subscription service, highlighting the game’s wide appeal and reach.

Chasing the Legacy of Skyrim and Fallout 4

With Starfield’s initial success, Bethesda, under Spencer’s leadership, aims to replicate the enduring popularity of its legendary titles, Skyrim and Fallout 4. Skyrim has sold a staggering 60 million copies since its release a decade ago, and Fallout 4 boasts 25 million sales. Spencer’s goal is to see Starfield achieve similar, if not greater, longevity and acclaim.

To sustain the game’s momentum and appeal, Bethesda is focusing on the upcoming ‘Shattered Space’ expansion and official mod support. Mods have played a crucial role in extending the lifespan of Skyrim, and Spencer is confident they will do the same for Starfield. He foresees that space and exploration enthusiasts will engage with Starfield for many years, much like fantasy lovers have with Skyrim.
