Paramount Plus Pulls the Plug on Wolf Pack After Just One Season

Exploring the factors behind the supernatural drama's cancellation, industry reactions, and the future of streaming content.

In a move that has sent ripples through the entertainment industry, Paramount+’s recent supernatural drama series, “Wolf Pack,” starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, has been officially canceled after just one season. The series, which debuted in January 2023, was based on the book series by Edo Van Belkom and had garnered a dedicated following, but it wasn’t enough to secure its future.

Paramount+ is currently undergoing significant structural changes, including cost-cutting measures that are impacting various departments, notably the programming teams.

Bob Bakish, in a memo, emphasized the need for the company to operate more leanly and focus resources on globally resonant franchises. Unfortunately for “Wolf Pack,” this strategic shift meant that despite the initial work and planning for a second season, it fell short of the new criteria for continuation.

The series’ storyline revolved around teenagers Everett (Armani Jackson) and Blake (Bella Shepard), whose lives intertwine with fraternal twins Harlan (Tyler Lawrence Gray) and Luna (Chloe Rose Robertson) after a California wildfire awakens a terrifying supernatural creature.

The series blended elements of mystery, supernatural lore, and teen drama, culminating in a unique narrative that explored the depths of family, identity, and destiny.

The Industry’s Reaction and Edo Van Belkom’s Perspective

The cancellation news came as a disappointment to many, including the series’ author Edo Van Belkom. He expressed his feelings on social media, noting the unfortunate timing of the Writer’s Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild strikes, which impacted the show’s production schedule and contributed to its demise. Van Belkom had looked forward to a cameo in the anticipated second season and expressed empathy for the cast and crew who saw “Wolf Pack” as a significant career opportunity.

Jeff Davis, the writer and executive producer of “Wolf Pack,” along with Sarah Michelle Gellar, who also served as an executive producer, had hoped for the show’s continuation. Their efforts to bring Van Belkom’s vision to the screen were met with appreciation from the author, who thanked Davis for his respectful adaptation and collaboration.
