The universe of ‘Doctor Who‘ is set for a significant change, with reports indicating that Andor star Varada Sethu will be stepping in as the new companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor, replacing Millie Gibson after just one season.

This unexpected development, initially reported by The Mirror and later corroborated by sources at Variety, reveals that Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday, will be exiting the series following her inaugural season. The decision, made by showrunner Russell T Davies, aligns with his history of frequently rotating companions. While some, like Martha Jones and Donna Noble, have also had brief stints, others such as Clara Oswald and Amy Pond have enjoyed longer tenures.

Gibson’s departure won’t be immediate; she is slated to appear in three episodes of the upcoming 15th season. One of these episodes is expected to be a standalone installment, dedicated to concluding Ruby Sunday’s storyline. This approach mirrors the show’s tradition of giving companions both meaningful introductions and farewells.

Varada Sethu, known for her role as Cinta in ‘Andor’ and an appearance in ‘Jurassic World Dominion,’ brings a strong science fiction background to the TARDIS. Her casting continues the ‘Doctor Who’ legacy of introducing fresh faces with solid genre credentials. The Mirror also hints at a guest companion featuring in this year’s Christmas special, although details remain under wraps.

Doctor Who producer Joel Collins, in a conversation with SFX Magazine, described Gatwa’s first season as “an amazing ending” and akin to a roller coaster ride. This sentiment underscores the show’s commitment to delivering dynamic and engaging story arcs for both the Doctor and their companions.

‘Doctor Who’ is known for its ever-evolving cast and narrative, and the introduction of Sethu as the new companion is a testament to this enduring adaptability. As fans prepare to bid farewell to Gibson’s Ruby Sunday, they also eagerly anticipate the new adventures and chemistry that Sethu will bring to the series.
