iPhone 16 Series Gears Up for RAM Boost but Holds Back on 5G

A Mix of Enhancements and Status Quo in Apple's Latest Offerings.

The tech world is abuzz with the latest leaks surrounding Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 series, offering a mix of exciting upgrades and some less-than-anticipated news. The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are reportedly set to receive a notable increase in RAM, although they may not feature the latest advancements in 5G technology.

According to Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities, and as reported by MacRumors, the iPhone 16 and its larger counterpart, the iPhone 16 Plus, are expected to boast 8GB of RAM. This is a significant step up from the 6GB found in their predecessors, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

This increase in RAM would align the standard models with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as their successors in the 16 series, marking a uniform memory capacity across the range. However, Pu suggests that the Pro models will not see an increase in RAM this year, indicating a strategic decision by Apple to maintain a consistent performance level across its flagship devices.

5G Advancements: A Pro Model Exclusive?

In terms of connectivity, the Pro models are rumored to be receiving the Snapdragon X75 modem. This upgrade is expected to enhance 5G download and upload speeds significantly compared to the X70 modem currently used in iPhones.

Moreover, the X75’s improved energy efficiency, reportedly using up to 20% less power, could lead to better battery life, especially when utilizing 5G services. However, the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are likely to retain the Snapdragon X70 modem, missing out on these 5G advancements.

On a positive note, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are rumored to be equipped with Wi-Fi 6E support, enhancing their Wi-Fi performance. This feature would bring the standard models in line with the Pro variants in terms of Wi-Fi capabilities, offering a consolation of sorts for the absence of the newer 5G modem.

Cautious Optimism as Launch Approaches

While these leaks provide a tantalizing glimpse into what the iPhone 16 series might offer, it’s crucial to approach them with a degree of skepticism. With the expected release not until September, there is still ample time for adjustments and refinements in Apple’s plans.

Nonetheless, if these rumors hold true, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are poised to deliver improved multitasking capabilities, while the Pro models could further enhance the 5G experience and offer better battery efficiency.
