Allen’s Latest Finds US Home, But Likely a Bittersweet Swan Song

MPI provides US theatrical and digital release for Allen's new film, though likely a bittersweet coda to his career.

Woody Allen’s latest film, “Coup de Chance,” will receive a US theatrical and digital release in April via MPI Media Group, marking a rare domestic distribution deal for the director amidst ongoing backlash.

“Coup de Chance” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September, eliciting both protests and praise. Set in Paris, the French-language thriller follows a love triangle embroiled in murder and intrigue.

Critics acknowledged Allen’s strong return to form, with Variety calling it his best work since 2013’s “Blue Jasmine.” However, US distributors have shunned Allen since his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow revived molestation allegations against him during the #MeToo movement.

High-profile actors like Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Hall have expressed regret at working with Allen, making US releases difficult. But boutique distributor MPI seized the opportunity, likely hoping ongoing audience interest outweighs controversy.

At 86, Allen has suggested “Coup de Chance” may be his last film, though he still harbors ideas. But lacking mainstream backing, the auteur admits he lacks “verve” for the struggle of independently financing projects.

So while “Coup de Chance” earns a US platform, it may also serve as a swan song. MPI’s limited release caters to Allen’s remaining core audience, while much of Hollywood continues distancing itself from the director.

Coup de Chance

For moviegoers, the film provides a chance to evaluate Allen’s craft separate from personal opinions. And if Allen indeed retires, “Coup de Chance” offers closure for an undeniably influential, if divisive, career.

Despite critical praise, “Coup de Chance” symbolizes Allen’s diminished prospects for future projects. Its release reflects lingering demand from loyal fans, but remains small-scale given the toxicity surrounding him. If Allen’s filmmaking days are numbered, this modest finale underscores his diminished clout as a director.
