Margot Robbie, the leading star of the highly acclaimed film ‘Barbie‘, has taken a gracious stance regarding the recent Oscar nominations. Despite the film’s remarkable achievement of securing eight Oscar nods, Robbie’s absence from the Best Actress category has been a topic of much discussion. However, the actress and producer is focusing her attention on celebrating the success of the film and its director, Greta Gerwig.
A Focus on Collective Achievement
During a SAG-AFTRA discussion alongside her co-stars, as reported by Variety, Robbie addressed the Oscar nominations. She expressed no discontent over her personal omission from the awards, emphasizing her gratitude and the film’s collective success. “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” she remarked, highlighting her positive outlook.
Robbie’s primary concern, however, was the overlook of Greta Gerwig in the Best Director category. This exclusion has been a recurring theme for Gerwig, who faced a similar situation a few years ago with ‘Little Women’. Robbie praised Gerwig’s directorial prowess, describing her work on ‘Barbie’ as a unique and remarkable achievement. “What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing,” Robbie stated, underscoring her admiration for Gerwig’s talent.
The Irony of the Oscars
The Oscar nominations have raised eyebrows, considering the film’s widespread acclaim and the backing of Warner Bros. and Mattel. The absence of Gerwig in the Best Director category, despite ‘Barbie’s’ impressive performance in other categories, including a Best Picture nomination, has been a point of contention.
Meanwhile, Robbie’s co-star Ryan Gosling has received significant recognition. Nominated for both the original song ‘I’m Just Ken’ and his performance as Barbie’s male counterpart, Gosling’s nominations add a layer of irony to the situation.
His portrayal, which thoughtfully deconstructs the character of Ken, has earned him a nod in the Supporting Actor category, potentially drawing more attention come award night. America Ferrera, another cast member, has also been recognized with a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
