Netflix Boss Shoots Down David Fincher US Remake Rumors for Squid Game

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos shuts down speculation that David Fincher will helm an American version of the hit Korean thriller.

Squid Game

During a recent trip to South Korea, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos directly addressed speculation that acclaimed director David Fincher is working on an American remake of the streaming giant’s hit show Squid Game. Sarandos dismissed the rumored project involving Fincher as “just a rumor,” seeming to dash hopes of a US-based iteration of the violent survival drama.

Squid Game became a global phenomenon upon its debut in September 2021, holding the title as Netflix’s biggest series launch ever. The Korean thriller’s second season is set to premiere later this year, continuing the story of Seong Gi-hun’s quest for revenge against the VIP orchestrators of the deadly competition.

Given the massive popularity of Squid Game, rumors swirled that Netflix might look to capitalize further by developing an English-language remake spearheaded by Fincher, known for dark, gripping films like Seven and Fight Club. However, Sarandos has asserted these rumors are false for now. A remake is likely unwarranted given the original series remains ongoing.

Squid Game stood out precisely because it provided a gripping yet insightful look into Korean culture, tapping into economic anxieties and class divides with thrilling storytelling. Attempting an American version while the original creative vision still lives on could seem derivative or dull its impact. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Hwang Dong-hyuk’s vision versus a rehashed take missing his specific cultural touchstones.

For now, Netflix is focused on delivering Season 2 of the authentic Korean phenomenon to anxious fans worldwide. Though never say never, a Fincher-helmed remake sounds unlikely until the current incarnation of Squid Game reaches its organic conclusion. Netflix knows the power of originality – reinventing a still-unfolding story risks diminishing that special spark.
