A New Path for Ed in Street Fighter 6

Ed Reimagined: A Pugilist Reborn in Street Fighter 6.

Street Fighter 6

Capcom has unveiled an exciting new gameplay trailer for Ed, giving fighting game fans a detailed look at how the psycho-powered pugilist will evolve in Street Fighter 6. Ed was first introduced in Street Fighter 5 as the “son” of Balrog and a product of Shadaloo’s experiments combining psycho power and genetic engineering. In SF5, Ed had a simplified movelist to make him more approachable for new players. However, in SF6, Ed emerges with a completely revamped fighting style centered around boxing.

While Ed retains his potent psycho powers, unleashing a flurry of glowing purple punches is now his main method of attack. The new trailer shows Ed unleashing a range of punching combinations, uppercuts, and psycho-charged techniques, demonstrating a mastery of boxing fundamentals. This pivot to pugilism gives Ed’s character new depth and background, establishing him as a student of boxing who has augmented his skills with psycho energy. Ed’s origins in Shadaloo provide context for his martial arts journey, reflecting a desire to find his own path.

A New Fighting Style for Ed

Capcom has also revealed Ed’s control scheme will be adapted for SF6’s new Modern and Classic modes. With Modern controls, Ed retains his easy inputs from SF5, allowing newcomers to pull off his moves. With Classic controls, Ed gains traditional fighting game commands that offer more options for veteran players. This shows Ed will be accessible for players of all skill levels.

The trailer also showcases Ed’s new home stage, the Ruined Lab. This shattered Shadaloo facility represents Ed’s break from his past, hinting at a new outlook. Ed’s release on February 27 will likely reveal more about his backstory and motivations. As the penultimate DLC character for SF6’s Year 1 pass, Ed’s reinvention channels the game’s themes of growth and change. While staying true to his roots, Ed is forged anew.
