EA Angers Fanbase By Charging for Ultimate Team’s “Packs For You”

Requiring purchase of new loyalty packs undermines their purpose as rewards, angering players.

EA Sports FC 24

EA Sports FC recently introduced a new “Packs For You” feature to its popular Ultimate Team mode. These special packs reward players for loyalty milestones like consecutive daily logins. However, requiring players to purchase the packs with in-game currency sparked community backlash.

Previously, Ultimate Team promotions would grant free loyalty reward packs to engaged players. For example, special Player Days events gave users free gifts for accessing Ultimate Team that day. This built goodwill through freebies that recognized player dedication.

The new Packs For You section abandons this model. Despite being marketed as “rewards,” the packs are only available via standard purchase methods. Prices match other Ultimate Team packs, demanding hard-earned coins or real money.

A History of Free Ultimate Team Loyalty Rewards

Many users feel this shows a lack of actual “reward” for loyal players. Packs framed as gifts for dedication should be complimentary, not paid items. Having to buy your own loyalty rewards defeats their purpose for many.

This monetization follows existing Ultimate Team criticism over excessive microtransactions and enabling “pay to win” advantages. Combined with other recent issues like glitched content and stat allocation problems, player frustration towards Ultimate Team is growing.

Some speculate EA is capitalizing on Packs For You to boost revenue from its most lucrative game mode. While logical from a business standpoint, it risks alienating the community further. Maintaining goodwill should take priority over short-term income gains.

Monetizing Dedication Risks Community Backlash

EA Sports FC still dominates the competitive soccer gaming market. But shakeups like the loss of FIFA branding keep players on edge. Alienating loyal fans with poorly received monetization and rewards is dangerous amidst rising competition.

The developers must tread carefully to retain good faith. Focusing on free gestures of appreciation over paid loyalty rewards could help rebuild trust. Otherwise, dissatisfaction with Ultimate Team’s direction may drive players away for good.
