Helldivers 2 Launch Plagued by Server and Performance Problems

Developers apologize after login issues and patch problems, promise make-good rewards for affected players.

The highly anticipated co-op shooter sequel Helldivers 2 has suffered login, progression, and performance problems since launching last week. Developer Arrowhead Game Studios has scrambled to issue patches and apologies while promising compensation for affected players.

Helldivers 2 arrived on PlayStation 5 and PC to significant fanfare as the followup to the cult classic original. However, server and reward tracking issues quickly surfaced, hampering the ability to play and progress. Players reported frequent disconnects, login failures, and mission rewards not registering properly.

This resulted in lost progression, particularly frustrating for a title centered on incrementally strengthening your character through missions. Arrowhead attempted to resolve the problems with a patch on January 12th, but it caused severe performance dips and was promptly rolled back.

A Rocky Start for the Co-op Sequel

In a statement, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt acknowledged the game’s unstable launch and promised transparency on solutions. The team continues investigating the causes while deploying incremental patches to alleviate specific problems.

The latest patch on February 13th focused on server capacity, login issues, and mission reward tracking for PlayStation 5. Arrowhead claims this same patch caused the PC performance problems, which they are still diagnosing. A make-good reward event will compensate players for lost progress.

Transparency and Compensation to Retain Players

Despite the technical troubles, Helldivers 2 has seen strong sales as Sony’s biggest PC launch to date. But retaining players requires quickly stabilizing the experience. Arrowhead is working hard to validate fans’ excitement and meet the sequel’s high expectations.

If they can smooth out the remaining hiccups, Helldivers 2 should become the co-op hit its predecessor was. The core of a great game is there when it works. For now, fans appreciate the transparency and urgency around fixes.
