Multiplayer Makes Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo’s Fastest-Selling Mario Ever

Nintendo says Wonder's multiplayer focus was critical to becoming fastest-selling Mario game.

The latest 2D Mario platformer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, has become Nintendo’s fastest-selling Mario game ever. In a recent investor Q&A, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa credited multiplayer functionality as a key factor behind Wonder’s runaway success.

Wonder offers both local and online multiplayer for up to 12 players. Furukawa revealed approximately half of players experienced the game’s levels through multiplayer. He explained the feature “suited the need for a game many people can enjoy with family and friends” during the holiday season when it launched.

Furukawa also noted the Super Mario Bros. movie likely boosted awareness and sales. Even after leaving theaters, the film continues gaining new viewers on streaming, further driving interest in the Wonder game.

Multiplayer Engagement Central to Wonder’s Record Performance

Nintendo previously announced Wonder sold a staggering 4.3 million copies within two weeks of launch, and anticipated continued momentum. Furukawa’s comments provide insight into the ingredients of its popularity.

Unlike most 2D Mario titles, Wonder seamlessly integrated multiplayer into genre-defining Mario platforming. Reviewers praised this evolution, alongside the new Elephant power-up and beautiful Flower Kingdom aesthetics.

But Nintendo credits shared experiences as truly vital. Wonder understood the appeal of joyfully progressing through Mario levels with loved ones. This exemplifies Nintendo’s genius for crafting ageless local multiplayer gameplay, now adapted perfectly for online connectivity.

The movie symbiotically built excitement for more Mario adventures. But the integration of multiplayer stands out as enabling a classic solo franchise to flourish as a massive shared phenomenon. It transformed Wonder into both a coveted family holiday gift, and an online party staple.

Once again, Nintendo has leveraged multiplayer and intellectual property to create record-breaking success. The lessons of Wonder will inform its efforts to continually craft magical social experiences transcending generations.
