Microsoft Taps Intel Foundry for Next-Gen Custom Processors

Microsoft has selected Intel’s cutting-edge 18A fabrication technology to produce its upcoming custom processors, the companies jointly announced. The deal marks a major win for Intel Foundry as it seeks to attract high-profile clients to its foundry business.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated the partnership would enable “a very exciting platform shift that will fundamentally transform productivity.” He touted the need for advanced, reliable semiconductors to achieve Microsoft’s vision, driving the collaboration with Intel Foundry.

Though details remain scarce, Intel’s 18A process featuring RibbonFET transistors and advanced power delivery promises major gains in performance and efficiency. This could allow Microsoft to innovate significantly with its next-generation processors spanning servers, PCs, and potentially Xbox hardware.
