Oscar Winner Cillian Murphy Digs Into Mining Drama ‘Blood Runs Coal’

Fresh off 'Oppenheimer' Success, Murphy to Portray Deadly Union Corruption in Adaptation.

Fresh from his Academy Award-winning performance in Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed ‘Oppenheimer,’ Cillian Murphy is set to tackle another gripping real-life drama with ‘Blood Runs Coal.’ Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to adapt the non-fiction book of the same name by Mark A. Bradley, with Murphy attached to star and produce.

‘Blood Runs Coal’ will transport audiences to the turbulent world of 1960s union politics and corruption within the coal mining industry. The film is based on Bradley’s 2020 book, ‘Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America,’ which delves into the shocking 1969 triple homicide of union organizer Joseph “Jock” Yablonski, his wife, and daughter.

Yablonski’s murder occurred after he campaigned against a notoriously corrupt union leader, igniting a far-reaching investigation that exposed the seedy underbelly of the coal industry’s shady dealings. Murphy is expected to take on a leading role in this gritty historical drama, though specific character details have yet to be revealed.

Joining Murphy as producers are John Davis and Jordan Davis of Davis Entertainment, as well as Alan Moloney through Murphy’s own Big Things Films banner. Author Mark A. Bradley will also serve as an executive producer, ensuring the authentic portrayal of his meticulously researched source material.

The screenplay adaptation will be penned by the accomplished writing duo of Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, whose collaborative credits include the acclaimed films ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Spectre,’ and ‘Ford v Ferrari.’

“Cillian Murphy’s undeniable talent and commitment to bringing complex, true-life stories to the big screen make him the perfect choice to lead ‘Blood Runs Coal,'” said Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley. “This powerful narrative shines a light on a dark chapter in American history and the courageous individuals who fought against corruption, even at the cost of their own lives.”

In addition to ‘Blood Runs Coal,’ Murphy’s upcoming slate includes a highly anticipated sequel trilogy to the post-apocalyptic thriller ’28 Days Later,’ which launched his career in 2002, as well as a feature film adaptation of the beloved BBC series ‘Peaky Blinders.’

As he continues to build an impressive body of work, Murphy’s involvement in ‘Blood Runs Coal’ promises to deliver another captivating portrayal of a pivotal moment in history, further cementing his status as one of the most versatile and compelling actors of his generation.
