Insiders Claim 2003 3D Platformer Getting Modernized with Unreal Engine 5.

According to multiple insiders, Sega is reportedly working on a remake of the cult classic 2003 3D platformer Sonic Heroes, with the modernized version allegedly in development for Nintendo’s upcoming successor to the Switch console.

The rumor was initially sparked by a report from Universo Nintendo, which claimed that Sega is remaking Sonic Heroes, potentially utilizing the powerful Unreal Engine 5. This claim was subsequently corroborated by the reputable Sega and Atlus leaker known as @MbKKssTBhz5 (Midori) on Twitter.

Sonic Heroes, which originally launched for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC in 2003, was a notable departure from the traditional Sonic formula. Instead of controlling a single character, players took command of teams comprised of three heroes, each with unique abilities categorized as Speed, Flight, and Power types.

The game featured four distinct teams: Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles), Team Dark (Shadow, Rouge, E-123 Omega), Team Rose (Amy, Cream, Big), and Team Chaotix (Espio, Charmy, Vector). Players had to strategically switch between characters to overcome obstacles and utilize powerful “Team Blast” attacks.

While met with mixed reviews upon its initial release, Sonic Heroes has cultivated a dedicated fan following over the past two decades. However, the game’s reputation has been marred by issues such as camera problems, performance hiccups, and Sonic Team’s well-documented struggles in adapting the franchise to 3D platforming at the time.

If the rumors prove accurate, this rumored Sonic Heroes remake could present an opportunity for Sega to address those longstanding criticisms while modernizing the experience with current technology like Unreal Engine 5.

“A Sonic Heroes remake makes a lot of sense for Sega,” said longtime gaming analyst Michael Pachter. “The game has its fans, but it also has clear room for improvement with today’s hardware and development tools. Revisiting it could be a smart way to bridge the gap between celebrating the past and pushing the franchise forward.”

While Midori has since walked back their stance slightly, stating that the remake is “being considered” rather than confirmed, the consistent chatter from credible sources suggests there may be truth to these rumblings.

As Nintendo prepares to unveil the Switch’s successor, potentially reviving beloved classics like Sonic Heroes could be an enticing proposition for the new hardware. Fans will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on any official announcements from Sega regarding the future of their iconic blue hedgehog.
