Long-Awaited Comeback: MultiVersus Fighting Game Set to Relaunch in May

Iconic crossover platform fighter poised for enhanced comeback nearly one year after sudden shutdown

Almost one year after abruptly shutting down operations to “prepare for full launch”, the popular crossover fighting game MultiVersus is ready to make its highly anticipated return on May 28th. This announcement came yesterday in a video update from Player First Games, the development studio behind the smash hit title.

MultiVersus first arrived on the scene in July 2022, merging iconic characters from across Warner Bros.’ vast catalog of intellectual properties, including DC Comics superheroes, Looney Tunes animated stars, and personalities from titles like Game of Thrones. The free-to-play platform brawler quickly amassed over 20 million players and became the most successful Warner Bros. game ever on Steam.

However, MultiVersus entered an extended hiatus last June to allow the development team time to overhaul critical areas of the game, including transitioning to Unreal Engine 5, upgrading netcode for better online performance, adding new modes and features, and expanding the selection of playable fighters. Yesterday’s video finally confirmed these efforts have paid off and unveiled the relaunch date.

Fans can expect a suite of major changes when MultiVersus returns on May 28th. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 will provide enhanced graphics with improved visual fidelity. The rebuilt netcode aims to deliver smooth competitive matches regardless of platform. Intriguing concepts for new stages could expand the battlefield. And while specifics remain unknown, Player First Games teased “some really exciting, brand-new personalities” coming to the character roster.

Most notably, an entirely new PvE mode is in development, giving solo players and teams the chance to battle AI enemies and unlock special rewards. This adds a cooperative dimension previously missing from the head-to-head competition.

With all these upgrades and additions, MultiVersus appears poised to regain its momentum when it drops back into the ring this May. The fighting game landscape has certainly felt empty without Bugs Bunny brawling against Batman for nearly a full year. But the wait is almost over, and fans can soon re-experience this inventive crossover title in its best form yet.
