Sony Gears Up for PS5 Pro Launch with Major Performance Boost

Leaked documents point to holiday 2024 launch for significantly upgraded console

According to leaked technical documents, Sony is working on a major performance upgrade for its PlayStation 5 console dubbed the “PS5 Pro.” The enhanced hardware, codenamed “Trinity,” is rumored to pack a substantial punch, with the potential to triple the PS5’s computing power.

The leaked specs,Corroborated by multiple sources, point to the PS5 Pro boasting a graphics processing unit (GPU) capable of an estimated 33.5 teraflops of single-precision compute performance. This would represent a staggering 45% rendering improvement over the base PS5’s GPU and nearly triple the 10.28 teraflops of the original model.

Perhaps even more striking is the claim that the PS5 Pro could offer up to three times the ray tracing performance of the current PS5, with some scenarios suggesting a quadruple increase. Ray tracing, a demanding rendering technique that mimics how light behaves in real life, has been a key selling point for the latest generation of consoles but has also required significant computational resources.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the rumored PS5 Pro is its purported use of proprietary machine learning technology for enhanced visuals. Dubbed “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution” (PSSR), this upscaling solution is described as Sony’s answer to Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR, leveraging AI to boost game resolutions while maintaining high image quality.

According to reports, PSSR will initially enable upscaling to 4K resolution, with the potential to reach a blistering 8K in future iterations. This cutting-edge upscaling could help the PS5 Pro offset the performance hit from advanced ray tracing and unlock even higher graphical settings in games.

While these leaked specs have yet to be officially confirmed by Sony, multiple sources claim the company’s own first-party studios have been testing PS5 Pro development kits since last September. Third-party developers were reportedly given access in January 2024, suggesting the validity of an anticipated holiday 2024 launch window.

If accurate, the substantial performance gains of the PS5 Pro would give Sony’s console a considerable edge over Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, currently rated at 12 teraflops. This next evolution could reignite the heated “console wars” and push the boundaries of what’s possible on living room gaming hardware.
