George R.R. Martin Unveils Official House of the Dragon Coloring Book for Fans

The illustrated book offers a creative way for fans to engage with the hit Game of Thrones prequel series.

As anticipation builds for the highly anticipated second season of House of the Dragon, series creator George R.R. Martin has announced a unique new way for fans to immerse themselves in the Targaryen-focused world of Westeros.

Martin revealed on his blog that an official House of the Dragon coloring book is set to be released on May 7, providing viewers with over 75 intricate illustrations to bring to life through color. The book will feature key scenes, characters, and iconic imagery from the acclaimed Game of Thrones prequel series.

To whet fans’ appetites, Martin shared a pair of sample pages from the forthcoming coloring book. The first depicts a rare moment of tenderness between Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), whose strained relationship is central to the show’s overarching conflict. The second sample showcases the fearsome Caraxes, the “Blood Wyrm” dragon.

“If two images epitomize the series, these are the ones that do it,” Martin wrote, noting how the subtext of the Alicent-Rhaenyra dynamic “underlies each scene that they’re in and colors their interactions even when they’re fighting.”

While the gritty, adult-oriented content of House of the Dragon may seem an unlikely source material for a coloring book, Martin believes it represents a “risk-free way to get a younger audience interested in Westeros.” The book will avoid the graphic depictions seen in the TV series, instead allowing fans to appreciate the stunning character designs and awe-inspiring dragons.

Of course, the House of the Dragon coloring book is not just for children. Adult coloring books have become a popular commodity in recent years, providing an engaging creative outlet. Fans of all ages will now have the opportunity to lose themselves in the intricate illustrations of beloved characters like Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) as they await the arrival of Season 2.

House of the Dragon

With the next installment of House of the Dragon not expected to hit screens until June 2024, this coloring book offers a fun way for devotees to occupy their time and channel their passion for the Targaryen dynasty. As George R.R. Martin notes, it’s the perfect activity to indulge in “until viewers can see the ramifications of Aemond killing Lucerys Velaryon in the Season 1 finale.”

Priced at $18.99, the House of the Dragon coloring book is now available for pre-order through Penguin Random House, providing fans an exciting new way to explore and reimagine the world of Westeros.
