Sam Raimi Douses Flames on Spider-Man 4 Rumors with Tobey Maguire

Filmmaker Expresses Love for Maguire's Return but Dismisses Concrete Plans for Another Installment.

In a world where beloved franchises are constantly revived and reimagined, the rumor mill has been abuzz with whispers of a tantalizing reunion between director Sam Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire for a potential fourth installment of the iconic Spider-Man film series.

However, in a recent interview, Raimi himself has addressed these persistent rumors, offering a clarification that may disappoint eager fans yearning for another chapter in their beloved web-slinger’s story.

During a conversation with CBR at WonderCon, the acclaimed filmmaker acknowledged the swirling speculation but candidly stated, “I’m not actually working on it yet.” While Raimi expressed his admiration for the current trajectory of the Spider-Man movies, including his delight in witnessing Maguire’s powerful return in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” he cast doubt on the likelihood of Marvel and Sony seeking his involvement for a fourth installment.

“I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!'” Raimi mused, hinting at the studios’ contentment with the direction taken by the Tom Holland-led iterations.

Despite the absence of concrete plans, Raimi’s affection for the original trilogy and its cast remains evident. When asked about the potential involvement of Maguire, he responded, “I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures. But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works.”

This statement echoes Raimi’s previous musings on the possibility of reuniting with Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, expressing a willingness to collaborate even if not specifically within the Spider-Man universe. “I’d love to work with Tobey again, in a different role,” he remarked in a 2022 interview with ComicBook.

While the prospects of a Raimi-directed “Spider-Man 4” starring Maguire may seem dim for the time being, the director’s candid remarks serve as a reminder that the realm of superhero narratives is ever-evolving, and nothing is truly off the table in the vast tapestry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For now, fans of the beloved web-slinger can revel in the nostalgia of Maguire’s multiversal cameo in “No Way Home” and Raimi’s recent foray into the mystical realms of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” As the director himself expressed, the success of the current Spider-Man trajectory may preclude a return to the past – but in a world where anything is possible, a glimmer of hope remains for those yearning to witness Maguire’s Spider-Man swing into action once more under Raimi’s expert guidance.
