The stakes continue escalating on FX’s epic drama Shogun, with a new trailer for episode 8 hinting at risky moves by Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) even as unrest threatens to shatter his tenuous hold on power.

Central to the upcoming installment is a mysterious mission that Toranaga tasks his trusted confidante Mariko (Anna Sawai) with in Osaka. Though the nature of this endeavor remains unclear, the preview shows John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) urging Mariko to refuse – advice she swiftly rejects, reaffirming her fierce loyalty.

Meanwhile, cracks are widening within Toranaga’s ranks as the losses mount. Having been outmaneuvered by the Council of Regents in his bid to survive, a cornered Toranaga finds even some of his samurai openly voicing opposition to following his lead any further.

The turmoil only deepens with the death of Toranaga’s son Nagakado (Yuki Kura) due to reckless actions, leaving the grieving daimyo vulnerable to his circling enemies. Foreshadowing a potential final gambit, the trailer’s final moments depict Toranaga seemingly preparing Mariko for a kamikaze-like mission.

Adding another layer is the scheming of Lord Ishido (Takehiro Hira), who proposes cementing an alliance through marriage with the influential Lady Ochiba (Fumi Nikaido).

With his forces fracturing and options dwindling rapidly, the path ahead for Toranaga appears increasingly desperate and high-stakes in this gripping adaptation of James Clavell’s acclaimed novel.

Potential challenges loom from all sides – Kashigi’s wavering loyalties, the simmering Blackthorne/Buntaro rivalry, and the ever-present threat of nature itself working against his survival.

As dissent brews openly among the ranks he once commanded, the newly widowed Toranaga may be forced into his most daring ploys yet to maintain his hold on power and stave off oblivion.
