A Legacy Enshrined: George Floyd Biopic “Daddy Changed the World” Announced

The family of George Floyd has authorized a dramatic retelling of the man whose tragic death catalyzed a worldwide movement against racial injustice.

Daddy Changed the World

Nearly four years after his horrific murder sparked global outrage and pivotal social justice protests, George Floyd’s impactful life story is headed to the big screen. Titled “Daddy Changed the World”, the upcoming biopic has been officially authorized by Floyd’s daughter Gianna and mother Roxie Washington, who will serve as executive producers.

The film aims to humanize the 46-year-old father whose senselessly brutal killing at the hands of Minneapolis police in May 2020 became a galvanizing moment. Captured on video, Floyd’s final anguished moments pleading for air as a white officer kneeled on his neck for nine excruciating minutes detonated a furious international reckoning on systemic racism and police violence against people of color.

“We are excited the world will see the real, jovial and loving George we know,” said Washington in a statement. “This film will humanize him, embody the essence of his life, and hopefully reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It’s time for justice and equality for all.”

While the dramatized account will surely depict Floyd’s harrowing final moments, the filmmakers have emphasized their intent to craft a “gritty drama” that explores the fuller arc of the man’s life and community. As producer Kaeita Rankin of 8 Queens Film & Media Production stated, their goal is to “inspire change and create a better future for generations to come. George Floyd’s legacy will not be forgotten.”

The production team, which also includes Radar Pictures (The Last Samurai, Jumanji) and Night Fox Entertainment, is currently searching for a director. Screenwriter Gregory R. Anderson (Stomp the Yard) has been tapped to pen the script.

With producing duties also set to include Floyd’s family members, “Daddy Changed the World” has been imbued from its inception with a deeply personal charge – to honor his memory while galvanizing continued momentum for meaningful societal reform in his name.

The biopic’s very title invokes the seismic impact of Floyd’s agonizing end, which catalyzed a reawakening to the painful realities of racial inequality and minority oppression plaguing America. His 7-year-old daughter Gianna’s heartbreaking declaration in the wake of his death – “Daddy changed the world” – instantly crystallized his legacy as a tragic symbol of the urgent need for change.

Now, that dearly resonant phrase will serve as the namesake for ensuring George Floyd’s spirit, struggles, and untold stories receive their defining cinematic spotlight on the road toward realizing his indelible impact. For his loved ones and a movement still yearning for justice, this authorized dramatization could be the ultimate testament to a life brutally cut short, but never forgotten.
