MonsterVerse Recruits Shang-Chi Screenwriter for Next Godzilla x Kong Film

Accomplished screenwriter with Marvel and monster movie experience hired to continue Legendary's kaiju cinematic universe.

Legendary Pictures is doubling down on its wildly popular MonsterVerse franchise, tapping seasoned screenwriter Dave Callaham to pen the next installment following the box office success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The 2024 kaiju clash, which saw the iconic movie monsters team up against a frost-breathing Titan, has raked in an impressive $555 million globally against a $135 million budget.

While divisive among critics, the film’s strong audience reception with a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes made a sequel seem inevitable. “These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good,” said Legendary executive Mary Parent after the movie’s theatrical run, leaving the door open for the franchise’s continuation.

Enter Dave Callaham, whose writing credits span acclaimed superhero epics and monster mayhem alike. His recent work includes co-writing the acclaimed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel Studios and the eagerly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Callaham is no stranger to Legendary’s MonsterVerse either, having originated the story for the 2014 Godzilla reboot that kicked off the cinematic universe.

“Dave’s passion for both character-driven storytelling and spectacle made him the perfect fit to take the MonsterVerse into its next phase,” stated Jon Jashni, Chief Creative Officer at Legendary. “His ability to balance weighty themes with awe-inspiring action will surely capture the scale and spirit of these iconic Titans.”

Beyond continuing the adventures of Kong and Godzilla, plot details are tightly under wraps. However, the film will likely build upon the cataclysmic events of The New Empire, which saw the giant ape and lizard begrudgingly joining forces to prevent an ice age triggered by a powerful new Titan.

“The MonsterVerse has raised the bar for modern kaiju spectacle, and I’m honored to contribute to that legacy,” said Callaham. “Fans can expect a story that expands the vibrant world while exploring profound ideas and delivering geometric tons of mind-blowing monster mayhem.”

Filmmaking duo Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, who directed and co-wrote The New Empire, are currently not attached to the sequel. Legendary is expected to court a director soon as Callaham begins shaping the story.

With Callaham’s storytelling prowess and Legendary’s commitment to the property, the MonsterVerse’s clash of Titans rages on, promising another colossal cinematic experience.  Stay tuned for more monster-sized updates!
