Dwayne Johnson is making good on his signature catchphrase “You’re Welcome” by gifting fans with an electrifying behind-the-scenes look at his vocal return as the beloved demigod Maui in Disney’s live-action Moana remake.

In a social media video, the superstar can be seen vibing in a recording studio as he warms up his pipes on “You’re Welcome,” Maui’s iconic intro song from the 2016 animated smash hit. Johnson then launches into a full-throated rendition of the opening lyrics, proving he can still seamlessly channel the charismatic, boastful spirit of the iconic demi-god.

“The Final Boss easily slips back into the role of the demigod, offering a glimpse into the dedication and enthusiasm he’s bringing to the project,” teased the actor about reuniting with his animated counterpart for the live-action adaptation.

Johnson’s rousing recording studio performance is sure to delight longtime Moana fans anxiously awaiting his return while whetting appetites for the fresh take he’ll bring to Maui in live-action. His unrestrained commitment to inhabiting the over-the-top demi-god is evident.

Fittingly, the video tease arrived as production gears up for the Moana remake. Shooting is slated to begin this fall under the direction of Tony-winning Hamilton helmer Thomas Kail. The film will reunite the original’s acclaimed music team, screenwriter Jared Bush, songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda and others.

While newcomer Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the lead role in the 2016 film, is on board as an executive producer, Disney has not yet announced who will take on the live-action Moana. Johnson, however, is locked in to reprise Maui alongside his Seven Bucks Productions partners serving as producers.

The animated Moana was a cultural phenomenon, lauded for its lush visuals, empowering story, indelible music and Johnson’s scene-stealing supporting turn. The mystical Polynesian tale of a young woman’s epic journey to save her island home charmed audiences to the tune of $690 million at the global box office.

Now, Johnson and company look to recapture that magic and spirit of Polynesian representation in an immersive live-action format. If this rousing recording studio clip is any indication, the highly anticipated remake is shaping up to be yet another welcome entry in Johnson’s storied career bringing larger-than-life characters to the big screen.
