‘Jackpot’: First Look at John Cena, Awkwafina in Paul Feig’s High-Stakes Action Comedy

Director Paul Feig unleashes a first look at his upcoming action-comedy 'Jackpot,' featuring John Cena and Awkwafina caught in a perilous chase for a multi-billion-dollar lottery prize.

Get ready for a wild ride as Prime Video unveils the first glimpse of ‘Jackpot,’ an adrenaline-fueled action-comedy from the mind of acclaimed director Paul Feig. Starring John Cena and Awkwafina, the upcoming film promises a high-stakes adventure filled with thrills, laughs, and a battle for an unprecedented lottery jackpot.

In the near future, California has established a ‘Grand Lottery’ with a deadly twist: the winner becomes a target, and anyone who manages to eliminate them before sundown can legally claim the multi-billion-dollar prize. When Katie Kim (Awkwafina) unwittingly finds herself holding the winning ticket, she is thrust into a perilous game of survival, pursued by a relentless horde of jackpot hunters.

Desperate for protection, Katie reluctantly joins forces with Noel Cassidy (John Cena), an amateur lottery protector who vows to keep her alive until sundown in exchange for a cut of her winnings. However, their path to survival is littered with formidable obstacles, including the slick and ruthless Louis Lewis (Simu Liu), a rival protector determined to claim Katie’s commission at any cost.

Feig, best known for his acclaimed comedic hits like ‘Bridesmaids’ and ‘Spy,’ has long harbored a desire to craft a high-octane action-comedy inspired by the beloved Jackie Chan films. “This is the Jackie Chan movie I always wished I could make,” Feig excitedly shared with Entertainment Weekly. “What I love about Jackie Chan movies is that he’s a real, everyman caught in a situation he doesn’t want to be in. He’s the master of panicked fighting versus ‘I’m cool, and I’m going to take you on.'”

While ‘Jackpot’ promises to deliver exhilarating action sequences, Feig emphasizes that the film’s heart lies in its relatable characters and the humor that arises from ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. “I don’t like mayhem and action for action’s sake,” he explains. “It always has to advance the plot, be character-driven, and find the humor in people who aren’t normally in these situations getting in these situations — and how they get themselves out of it.”

With an ensemble cast led by the charismatic duo of Cena and Awkwafina, ‘Jackpot’ aims to strike a delicate balance between high-stakes thrills and genuine humor. Feig assures that while the premise is outrageous, the stakes remain real, creating a believable and engaging world for the characters to navigate.

Penned by Rob Yescombe and slated for release on Prime Video on August 15, ‘Jackpot’ promises to be a wild and exhilarating ride, blending Feig’s signature comedic sensibilities with a healthy dose of adrenaline-pumping action. Buckle up, and get ready to witness John Cena and Awkwafina in a fight for their lives – and a fortune beyond imagination.
