‘The Commandant’s Shadow’ Shines Light on the Höss Family’s Harrowing Holocaust Legacy

In the wake of the critically acclaimed film 'The Zone of Interest,' the documentary 'The Commandant's Shadow' delves into the true story of the Höss family, whose patriarch was the commandant of Auschwitz, and their descendants' reckoning with this dark history.

In the wake of Jonathan Glazer’s Academy Award-winning film ‘The Zone of Interest,’ a new documentary is set to shed light on the harrowing true story that inspired the fictional narrative. ‘The Commandant’s Shadow,’ a collaboration between Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Documentary Films, follows the descendants of Rudolf Höss, the infamous commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, as they grapple with their family’s dark legacy.

Directed by Daniela Völker, ‘The Commandant’s Shadow’ centers around two parallel narratives. The first follows Hans Jürgen Höss, the 87-year-old son of Rudolf Höss, as he confronts his father’s terrible actions for the first time. The second narrative revolves around Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, a Holocaust survivor who was imprisoned at Auschwitz, and her recollections of the atrocities she witnessed.

In a deeply powerful and emotional moment, these two narratives converge as Hans Jürgen Höss and Anita Lasker-Wallfisch meet, marking the first time the descendant of a major war criminal has met a survivor in such an intimate and private setting – Anita’s own living room in London. Joining them are their respective children, Kai Höss and Maya Lasker-Wallfisch, as the four protagonists navigate the complex web of their hereditary burdens.

‘The Commandant’s Shadow’ promises to provide an unflinching look at the legacy of the Holocaust, exploring the lasting impact of one of history’s darkest chapters on subsequent generations. The documentary incorporates original excerpts from Rudolf Höss’s autobiography, written shortly before his execution, offering a chilling firsthand account of the man who masterminded the murder of over a million Jews.

Produced by Gloria Abramoff and executive produced by a team including Wendy Robbins, Neil Blair, Jonathan Blair, Matti Leshem, Joel Greenberg, Len Blavatnik, Danny Cohen, Sajan Raj Kurup, Jani Guest, and Jamie Jessop, ‘The Commandant’s Shadow’ is a poignant and timely reminder of the importance of confronting the past, no matter how painful, to build a better future.

The Commandant’s Shadow

With antisemitism on the rise and the memory of the Holocaust fading for many, the documentary arrives at a crucial juncture, serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of hatred and the necessity of reconciliation through honest reckoning.

‘The Commandant’s Shadow’ will have a special theatrical release on May 29 and 30, providing audiences with the opportunity to witness this powerful exploration of history and its enduring echoes.
