Production to Span Prague and Spain Through End of 2024 for Prime Video Sci-Fi Sequel

Blade Runner 2099

The long-gestating journey into the far future of the iconic Blade Runner franchise is finally becoming a reality, as the highly anticipated Blade Runner 2099 series is slated to begin filming its first episodes this June.

According to exclusive reports, the Amazon Prime Video sci-fi sequel show will embark on a lengthy production schedule spanning from June through December of this year. Filming will take place across two countries – Prague and Spain – as the creative team brings the dystopian world of Blade Runner to life once more, 50 years after the events of the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049.

At the center of this new chapter is Michelle Yeoh, who will portray a replicant named Olwen nearing the end of her artificially prolonged lifespan. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the show is expected to explore profound themes of identity and mortality through Olwen’s dangerous quest.

The series hails from an accomplished production team with deep ties to the Blade Runner universe. Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) will serve as showrunner, guiding the overarching story, while Jonathan van Tulleken (Shogun) is attached to direct the initial episodes. Michael Green, co-writer of Blade Runner 2049, is on board as an executive producer alongside the legendary Ridley Scott, who directed the original 1982 classic.

With principal photography nearing, Blade Runner 2099 represents an exciting expansion of the beloved franchise’s rich mythology into the realm of episodic storytelling. While plot specifics are scarce, the prospect of a continuous, serialized narrative set in this visually striking world promises ample opportunity for world-building and character exploration.

As the cameras prepare to roll this summer, anticipation builds for a bold new vision of an iconic sci-fi future. Blade Runner 2099’s ambitious production timeline suggests the series could make its Prime Video debut as early as late 2025, finally unveiling the next chapter of this celebrated cinematic universe.
